UPDATE: This story has been updated to confirm that Penny Duperron is also running and has filed papers.
With three Osoyoos candidates now running for school board, an election will be required, assuming none of the candidates backs out.
Casey Brouwer, an incumbent trustee, and Brenda Dorosz, an education activist, both announced early Monday that they plan to run.
Penny Duperron confirmed Monday evening that she is running and has filed nomination papers.
Brouwer was elected in a November 2016 by-election to replace former trustee June Harrington, who stepped down.
Duperron, who trailed Brouwer by 40 votes in the by-election, will be making another try for election.
Duperron challenged the 2016 by-election in the B.C. Supreme Court on procedural grounds, but the court ruled against her challenge.
Osoyoos gets two trustee positions of the board of School District 53.
Marieze Tarr, the other incumbent trustee, is not seeking re-election.
Brouwer has lived in Osoyoos for the past 15 years, and has worked at the Town of Osoyoos during that time.
“I am committed to the students, the district and parents to providing quality education,” Brouwer said in a statement. “I believe everyone deserves the best we can offer, no matter the size of community they live in.”
Dorosz last week was trying to decide between running for Osoyoos town council and running for school board.
“There was lots of back-and-forth, but my decision is my passion for education and children and the importance of having a proper education from birth all the way through to adulthood,” she said.
In the past, Dorosz has served on parent advisory councils at Osoyoos Elementary School, Osoyoos Secondary School (OSS) and at the district level, including time on each as president.
She played a key role in mobilizing opposition to the planned closure in 2016 of OSS.
