Students in School District 53 will be participating in Preventure, a drug education program.
Letters have gone home to parents of Grade 8 students within the District, regarding the program.
“Preventure is a research-based program designed to provide vulnerable youth with the coping skills to be resilient to alcohol or drug experimentation or use,” school board chair Rob Zandee wrote in a report.
The program consists of assessing all Grade 8 students using the Substance Use Risk Profile assessment tool, a 23-item questionnaire.
Then, school counsellors score the results and determine which students may benefit from two 90-minute intervention lessons.
Although the lessons are made available to recommended students, it is optional for them to attend.
The curriculum covered in these lessons is part of the BC Ministry of Education Health and Career Education curriculum.
