Despite declines in revenue and a scaled back operating grant, School District 53 will have a balanced budget, officials say.
Recently the board discussed its draft $26.7 million budget for 2013/14 and highlighted a number of reductions the district is facing.
Secretary treasurer Lynda Minnabarriet reported a projected decline in enrolment – 84 full-time equivalent students. Operating revenue is being reduced by $282,000, while the district’s operating grant from the province will see a reduction of nearly $350,000.
(All figures are preliminary and have not been finalized.)
Minnabarriet said their surplus is projected to be approximately $600,000, part of which will be used to cover next year’s expenses.
“We are cautiously optimistic that we’ll start to see increases in revenue.”
Total operating expenses in 2013/14 are projected to be $23.4 million. Total salaries and benefits equal $20.1 million.
