It has taken many years to come true but the magnificent Frank Venables Theatre in Oliver will be home for a 45 voice choral performance.
The magical musical occasion will take place Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the South Okanagan Concert Society, the Capilano University Singers, a national and international prize-winning ensemble, will be in full voice.
Lars Kaario will conduct.
His concerts are characterized as “unforgettable, delightful, beautiful, and deeply satisfying musical experiences”. It promises to be a night to remember.
The choir is part of the Diploma of Music program at Capilano University and most of the singers are voice majors.
They have toured extensively over the years both in Canada and in Europe. One tour had them performing in Munich, Salzburg, Prague, Dresden and Wurzburg, singing in many cathedrals and other venues associated with the great composers of the past.
More recently, choir members had the opportunity to experience Italian culture and perform in the original venues in Venice, Florence and Rome where composers such as Vivaldi and Palestrina wrote their music.
Choir members gained historical context for the music they perform and they also were able to perform in historic locations. For example, they performed Vivaldi’s Gloria in the church where he performed his works in Venice.
Kaario is well known for his excellent organizational skills and programming abilities. He not only directs Capilano University Singers, but also the Capilano University Festival Chorus.
He is the head instructor in the University’s Conducting Certificate Program and he is founder and director of the acclaimed professional chamber choir Laudate Singers.
He possesses a fine tenor voice himself and has had leading roles in opera and musical theatre.
In oratorio he has been tenor soloist in works such as Bach’s B Minor Mass, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem.
The Feb. 5 concert will include selections from Handel’s Messiah and works by Anton Bruckner, Benjamin Britten, Rene Clausen and Eric Whitacre.
Come join us for a musical evening that will let your heart sing.
Thankfully, the acoustics inside the Frank Venables Theatre are outstanding and this should allow for a special listening experience.
Tickets are on sale at Beyond Bliss in Oliver and at Imperial Office Pro in Osoyoos and at the door provided there are seats left. Single admissions are $20 and those 17 and under are welcomed to all concerts free.
The venue is wheelchair accessible and those requiring transportation can arrange it by calling Maureen at 250-495 -7978.
See you there.
