How dare you (Town council) post no water restrictions. Who do you think you are?
Does cash flow seem more important than compliance to local and globally significant issues of our times? Shame on you!
Water is our #1 commodity . . . we’ve all known for years that eventually a crisis would occur, causing these drought conditions. Well, it’s here!
The province, including Oliver, is at Level 4 extreme drought conditions and includes restrictions and bans where necessary.
“Yes we are in drought conditions, regardless of what our councillors say. They don’t seem to believe we are involved in the provincial and or even the global drought crisis. How can you be so blind as to miss the significance of what’s going on? Or is money selling you out? I think so.
We are not privileged to decide what stage we’re in, when it is obvious we’re at Level 4 or at least Stage 3. Yet council decision is to put us in Stage 1. Seriously?
Andre Miller, in his wisdom, didn’t think drought was a problem this year as long as the government doesn’t come after the Town to mandate restrictions. Does that mean he proposes we will (sneak water as long as possible)?
Shawn Goodsell recommended Stage 1 restrictions and that this couldn’t be very detrimental to anyone (according to whom?).
Jack Bennest thinks it’s too late to worry, so why bother? He didn’t think it was necessary to follow the lead of other communities (his words).
Ron Hovanes likes to believe that the community has done enough in Oliver and after all, the summer is almost over (that’s it for now).
Rick Machial only seemed worried about the revenue to the city, lost due to implementing water restrictions. How very sad. Guess that’s why only 20 per cent restrictions were implemented because 30 per cent, as recommended, would lose even more money. Does that feel right? Consciously decided?
So are these five wise men our dictators to a better solution? Or do we take a global approach and become responsible citizens doing our part to impact our environmental issues towards our futures and that of the next generation? We are there, here, now and need responsible decisions now!
It’s not super science to know when economy needs to take the back seat to ecology.
You, our representatives have been chosen to make decisions based on our future . . . long term…not just today’s greedy needs.
We’re definitely in trouble when we accept these governing few to suggest we ignore the greater good for all. Let’s take responsibility ourselves . . . be ecologically responsible and self regulating.
How dare our decision makers try to put economics first. In the end we need water. You’re attributing to abusing it with mixed messages, councillors.
Most of us have children and even grandchildren who will inherit this world, this small town, etc, with it’s bad judgments implemented, such as these thoughtless ones have with their simple minded, self indulgences.
Hopefully someone will step up to tell the truth and live by it. … I know my kids and grandkids will be very angered by our decisions as they’ll affect them.
Should we teach our children how to deceive others by pretending the issues at hand are insignificant, that they don’t initially concern us, and we can put blinders on so it doesn’t affect us personally or monetarily? Is this the idea our councillors hope to achieve, to pass on, putting blinders on to the future, ignoring the bigger picture? Maybe you can fool some people who want instant gratification. . .green lawn like our parks department did? What a bad example we set by the green lawn at Lion’s Park . . . entering Oliver, sure is pretty. Does it make us a good example of conservation? No.
I am in touch with David Suzuki and only hope his agenda will allow for comments on the outdated views of the Town Of Oliver. I find it absolutely unbelievable and unacceptable.
Ulla Martin, Oliver
