The RCMP have been very busy in the Oliver area during the past year dealing with thefts, break-ins and drug offences. To give residents an opportunity to find out what’s going on, the RCMP is inviting the public to a safety forum at the Oliver Community Centre on Monday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. Residents will hear what the RCMP are doing about crime and what they can do to help prevent it in their neighbourhood.

Oliver RCMP is inviting residents of Oliver and area to attend a community safety forum on Monday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Oliver Community Centre.
Oliver Sgt. Blaine Gervais, Superintendent Kevin Hewco, S/Sgt. Kirsten Marshall, and community policing coordinator Rick Dellebuur will be in attendance.
“The focus of the meeting will be to discuss the recent crime in the area, what is being done and how the community can work with the RCMP to further reduce and prevent crime and the fear of crime in the Oliver area,” said Gervais, detachment commander.
Gervias added this is an opportunity to learn about what is happening in your community and what you can do to help make and keep your community safe.
For further information you can contact the Oliver detachment at 250-485-6220.
Mayor Ron Hovanes said he hopes the meeting will do a number of things.
“I really look forward to the dialogue between residents and the RCMP. People often feel unheard. I think this is an opportunity to share.”
Also, it will give the RCMP an opportunity to explain their role and their challenges, Hovanes said.
“I also hope that there will be some education to take home to help people make their homes and possessions more safe.”
Several Oliver business owners have expressed frustration about spending thousands of dollars on security to no avail. Therefore, they are calling on the Town and the RCMP to do more.
Town council recently approved spending more than $3,000 on local security patrols in an attempt to reduce thefts, break-ins and vandalism.
