Rattlers win Barriere tourney third year in a row
The Osoyoos Rattlers senior basketball team once again won the annual tournament in Barriere this past weekend.
This is the third year in a row that the Rattlers have finished first, said coach Casey Brouwer.
The Rattlers were hoping to face Barriere in the finals, as they did the first two years, but Barriere lost to George Elliot Secondary School from Winfield.
“We were hoping to play Barriere since we had already played George Elliot twice in our home tournament,” said Brouwer. “Both games against George Elliot were close and we knew we would have some work ahead of us if we wanted to take first.”
The Rattlers easily won their first two games, beating Clearwater 98-35 and then Heritage Christian School 72-26.
Those wins put them in the final game against George Elliot.
At the end of a hard-fought first half, the Rattlers held a 30-point lead over George Elliot, Brouwer said.
“Our third quarter was rough and George Elliot was slowly catching up,” he said. “In the fourth quarter, we came out solid and held the lead to win 84-71.”
Brouwer said he’s pleased with the team’s accomplishment and he’s grateful to the local families that travelled to Barriere to cheer on the boys.
“As a coach, I am very proud of our team and am excited to see where this season will take us,” said Brouwer. “Hopefully to the provincials.”
The Rattlers head to Salmon Arm this weekend for a 12-team tournament.
Then on Jan. 21 they play a game against archrivals from Similkameen Elementary Secondary School in Keremeos.
