The power outage on Friday morning in Osoyoos was caused by a motor vehicle accident that took place by 87th Street and 120th Avenue.

The accident happened at 8:14 a.m. and caused a utility pole to break.

Despite the significant damage to the pole as well as damage to the driver’s vehicle, the man was fortunately uninjured, according to the RCMP report about the incident. It also mentioned that he allegedly swerved to avoid deer that had walked out in front of him.

“There was a single occupant and he was able to get himself out. I do not know if he went to the hospital,” said Tyler Hilland, Osoyoos’ deputy fire chief, “I think he went home to call the accident in.”

The outage started at 8:24 a.m and lasted less than 15 minutes as the power came back at 8:50 a.m., according to the FortisBC. There were 1783 customers affected by the outage.

Hilland said crews will work for the next hour or so to replace the pole, with flaggers on 87th street to control traffic.

Speed is stated to be a contributing factor in the collision.
