The Perseid meteor shower was visible atop Anarchist Mountain east of Osoyoos on Thursday night, but clouds moved in obstructing the view. Many of the meteors only flashed for a split second and they were often high overhead and not visible over the landscape. There should be more meteor viewing Friday night (Aug. 12), and on Saturday evening you can watch at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, 717 White Lake Rd., Kaleden. If you missed the Perseid meteor shower Thursday night, you should get another chance to see them tonight (Friday).

Although the meteor shower is active between July 17 and Aug. 24, the peak is between Aug. 12 and 13.

On Thursday night east of Osoyoos on Anarchist Mountain, there were periodic short streaks of meteor light high up in the sky, but clouds moved in partially obscuring the view.

Environment Canada is predicting clear skies Friday night, but the outlook for Saturday looks less promising, with cloudy periods and a 30 per cent chance of showers for Osoyoos.

On Saturday evening, the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory is inviting the public to watch the meteors at the observatory at 717 White Lake Rd., Kaleden. It opens at 7:15 p.m. and there will be talks starting at 8 p.m. Sunset is around 8:15 p.m. and stargazing should be good after 9:30 p.m.
