Dear Editor:
Talented author David Snyder is having a book launch event this coming Saturday, April 23 at the Lakeside Resort in Penticton.
This is Snyder’s second edition detailing the history of Okanagan Valley Armed Forces veterans.
Seven of those stories are about World War Two RCAF airmen who were shot down and captured and became Prisoners of War (POW).
His book also details stories about veterans from this region who also participated in the Korean War, the Afghanistan War and the First World War.
Two of the honored guests at the book launch are retired RCAF pilots. One is the sole remaining Canadian pilot to participate in the Battle of Britain.
The other is the remaining RCAF pilot who flew the Super Marine Typhoon fighter aircraft.
These men live in Penticton. Both are in their mid 90’s.
We hope the television clip to promote this event will cover all of Canada.
The profit from Snyder’s books are forwarded directly toward the Cadet league of Canada.
In Canada, every fifth pilot was once an Air Cadet.
David Prystay, owner of the Lakeside Resort, offers accommodations at a special price for veterans, police officers, firefighters and first responders.
He calls it the 911 price – which is 70 per cent off the regular price, subject to availability.
Those personnel from long distance communities wishing to attend should reserve their rooms early.
Veterans from Commonwealth nations, NATO & SEATO nations are welcome.
Polish Veterans fought alongside Canadian troops in World War Two and Polish and Canadian UN troops served together on the 1973-79 United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF 2) mission in Egypt.
A large military turn out is expected at this weekend’s event.
Those intending to attend are asked to dress appropriately, which means casual or Legion/ANAV blazers, Grey pants, shirts and ties and black shoes.
Medals may be worn. This effort will be a special function.
Snyder’s son Jonathon was Penticton’s only son lost to enemy action in the Afghan War. He was one of 158 Canadian troops killed in that conflict..
Snyder, a retired Penticton teacher, spent 40 years in the Naval and Army reserve forces.
He also commanded Sea Cadets. The event begins at 1 p.m.
Thank you.
