Things are taking a dark turn at Osoyoos Secondary School with the drama club’s production of The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy opening this weekend.
The play is based on the traditional Addams Family theme but with a new plot: Wednesday Addams falls in love with a “normal” boy, and her family has to learn how to cope.
The hardest part about playing Wednesday? Keeping the romance authentic on stage, said Angelina Dortman.
“You’re trying not to laugh and just shrugging it off,” the Grade 11 student said.
She stars alongside Grade 10 student Jake Subotin as Gomez Addams and graduating student Lianne Shiels as Morticia Addams.
Playing a married couple on stage, Subotin and Shiels are thankful the script doesn’t call for anything “too uncomfortable.”
“Love is a hard thing to fake,” Subotin said.

“You want to make it look real but it’s also super awkward to interact,” Shiels added.
The three students are each returning to the stage, having performed in the school’s production of Shrek the Musical Jr. this spring.
Both productions are comedies, but being a dark comedy loaded with sarcasm, Shiels says keeping a straight face is difficult in The Addams Family.
“It’s so hard not to laugh on stage,” she said. “I’m super serious for most of the play and there’s a bunch of funny stuff going on and I’m trying not to laugh.”
The Addams Family – A New Musical Comedy shows at the Osoyoos Community Theatre at Osoyoos Secondary School on Nov. 22, 23 and 24. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday show starts at 2 p.m. Doors open one hour before showtime.
Tickets are $10 and available at Mills Office Pro until Nov. 21 and at the school office.
Students are hoping the public will come to a performance and see what they’ve been working on.
“We worked hard on it,” Subotin said. “You might as well.”
