An order by the Kamloops Fire Centre prohibits open fires in this region to help prevent summer wildfires.

On July 15, all Category 2 (burning pile) fires came under the order, expanding a previous order in June banning all Category 3 fires.

Other activities under the prohibition include fireworks, sky lanterns, and burn barrels. Campfires are not prohibited at this time.

Before lighting any fire, people should check with their local government and/or fire department.

Anyone found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, plus other fines.

The regional district reminds homeowners to take some simple steps to protect their property from wildfire this summer.

“What property owners need to be aware of is that during a wildfire, flying embers are the most common cause of igniting nearby homes and properties,” said FireSmart Coordinator Kerry Riess.

“By tidying your yard and removing flammable items and vegetation, you will reduce the source of fuel around your home. This decreases the risk of your home being ignited by these embers.”

Some tips to keep in mind:

• Move piles of firewood and rake leaves or dead material away from buildings.

• Clean your gutters of pine needles and other debris.

• Prune tree branches away from your roof.

• Mow the lawn and keep grasses trimmed.

• If you use a mower or weed eater on a hot day, be aware it has the potential to spark a fire.

In Oliver, fire department spokesman Rob Graham urges people to always use caution when burning anything, and always have a water source nearby.

Graham also asks that people show some understanding when firefighters investigate a report.

“We’re just doing our job. We don’t like to tell people to put out their fire.”
