Who will run for council?
unning for council in the upcoming municipal elections, but rather whether or not he will be running for Mayor.
I will be seeking election in some way, although I can't say right now what that position might be. I won't announce anything one way or the other until after the UBCM conference at the end of September, because when I do make an announcement, I will have to remove myself from the media work I am doing now. I don't want to have to do that until the last possible moment.rnShields has been elected Mayor of Osoyoos twice in the past, once in the early 1990s and again in the council prior to this one.
Shields lost the Mayor's seat to current mayor John Slater in the last Muncipal election in 2002.
Shields was re-elected back to council in a by-election last year after a council seat was vacated by Denis Brown.
Dick Flintoft, the longest-serving councillor, said chances are he will be running again.
Yes, I believe I will. I'm looking forward to it and I think this council has done a good job, said Flintoft.
There has been some controversy, and there always will be controversy because you can never please everyone.
When I first ran as a councillor, there was no work in Osoyoos, people were employed seasonally and businesses were closing down. Through all the job creation and economic development, most people who have better employment are happy with things.rnSecond-term councillor Bud Fraser, who was originally elected to council in a by-election in the previous council wouldn't commit.
Not definite yet, he said.
Ken Davreux was also uncommittal.
Honestly, right now I don't know. I enjoy the work that I have been doing and proud of the work we've done, said Davreux. We've got the skateboard park happening and have done a lot on the Sonora Centre, and I'm happy about that. But (my running) is a family decision and my family is still discussing it.rnNo one else has officially confirmed they are running in the November election, however, both Jean Gubby and Ted Cronmiller have indicated they intend to run. Both Cronmiller, a former Sergeant with the RCMP in Osoyoos, and Gubby, an active arts council member, ran in the most recent by-election but lost to Shields.
Nomination papers for the election are now available. This November, the public will be voting in candidates for Municipal, Regional District and School Board positions. Watch next week's Osoyoos Times to see if RDOS director Eike Scheffler plans to throw his hat back into the ring in Area A.
