The names have changed over the past 60 years, but one thing has remained constant in what is now called OneSky Community Resources, and that is the commitment to helping and supporting the people of the South Okanagan.

This year the non-profit community services organization is preparing to mark its diamond jubilee with a year-long celebration honouring the staff, clients, partners, and community that have shaped six decades of service.

“Our journey began with a simple mission: to create a way forward for everyone,” says Tanya Behardien, executive director of OneSky Community Resources. “Sixty years later, that mission remains at the heart of everything we do. We are deeply grateful to the community, our partners, and our dedicated staff for making this milestone possible.”

The theme for the 60th anniversary – Then. Now. Always. – reflects OneSky’s history, its present-day impact, and its long-term commitment to the region, the organization said.

“We wanted to honour our rich history, acknowledge the incredible work happening right now, and reinforce that we’re here for the long haul,” says Lisa Prokopenko, chair of the OneSky Board of Directors.

“We’re excited to celebrate with the community and to share our plan to recognize and strengthen OneSky’s legacy.”

OneSky has grown from modest beginnings in 1966 into a key provider of community support, delivering a broad range of life-changing programs and services – from early childhood education and youth programs to senior wellness, housing, and mental health supports.

Skilled professionals, educators, care workers, and volunteers help thousands of people each year build dignity, resilience, and well-being at every stage of life.

OneSky says it has continually adapted over the decades, to meet evolving community needs, expanding its reach across the region.

“We work hard to stay people-focused and to ensure we’re always moving forward,” says Behardien. “You see that in the opening of new childcare centres, expanded mental health and counselling services, the integration of our services into the historic CPR Station, and our growing presence in Oliver and Osoyoos.

Our programs now support hundreds of people every day with compassion, innovation, and a commitment to equity.”

As OneSky celebrates this milestone, the organization says it remains focused on its vision of inclusivity, partnership, and service.

“Then. Now. Always. isn’t just a theme, it’s a promise to continue building a stronger, healthier, more connected community for generations to come,” says Prokopenko. “We’re stewards of a remarkable organization and we’re proud to celebrate the work that has been done, the work underway, and the work still ahead. And we’re going to have some fun doing it.”

To commemorate 60 years, OneSky will host a series of community events including a fundraising gala on September 19, at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.
