The Olympic torch will pass through Osoyoos on January 24 and 25, 2010, on its coast-to-coast-to-coast journey across Canada leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver roughly 15 months from now.
The stop will be part of a 106-day, 45,000-kilometre relay that will take the torch through more than 1,000 Canadian communities in the hands of 12,000 torchbearers.
According to games organizers, the torch will pass within a one-hour-drive distance of 90 per cent of the country's population when it departs from Victoria on Oct. 30, 2009 on a trek that will take it through Canada's three territories and 10 provinces before arriving at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium on Feb. 12, 2010, in time for the opening ceremonies of the games.
Osoyoos Recreation Director Gerald Davis said a committee made up of games organizers, corporate sponsors and Osoyoos's Spirit of B.C. team will work together to customize how Osoyoos celebrates the arrival of the Olympic flame.
Although no concrete plans have been made, he said, the celebration will likely include music, fireworks and speeches from dignitaries and representatives of the games.
