Oliver’s warming centre for those in the community who are unhoused or precariously housed, will open its doors today (Jan. 23) at 4 p.m.

The centre, located in the Reception Hall of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 748 Similkameen Avenue in Oliver will remain open until 8:30 a.m. Friday morning during this cold weather period.

The shelter is the result of work between BC Housing, the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Oliver Missions Society.

The shelter opened for the first time this year on Sunday, Jan. 19 and opens when the temperature dips to a threshold level of -7° or colder.

The facility offers 20 cots in the warming centre and offers snacks and drinks as well as a basic breakfast in the morning before people head back out into the cold. Games and videos are available to help pass the time.

It’s likely the warming centre will continue to operate over the weekend as night time temperatures are forecast to be in the -7°C to -9°C range.

The warming centre and Oliver Missions Society are always in need of donations which can be made by calling the Missions Society’s Jo Tanner at 250-408-8527.
