Oliver is seeking an audience with the Minister of Tourism as one of its requests for the upcoming 2024 Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention.

The town has until June 21, 2024 to submit their full list of requests for meetings with the premier or various ministers.

Councillor Aimee Grice was the only one to make a suggestion in the council meeting, suggesting a meeting with the Minister of Tourism. Grice noted that a meeting would be helpful, particularly around the attempt to identify opportunities for diversifying tourism in the South Okanagan.

Diversifying tourism needs in the South Okanagan was a request that the Town of Oliver made at the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA) resolutions at the 2024 Annual General Meeting and Convention held at the beginning of May.

Oliver’s resolution was for the province to “provide financial investments to municipalities to identify how to diversify tourism impacted communities”.

Meeting with the Minister of Tourism, the town will want to shed light on this topic of diversifying tourism needs in smaller more rural communities.

Minister meetings at UBCM are in person and 15 minutes long. Oliver councillors were instructed that if they should think of any more meetings they may want they could inform town staff before the deadline.

The 2024 UBCM Convention will take place September 16 – 20 in Vancouver.
