The Rotary Club of Oliver has honoured Southern Okanagan Secondary School’s Deepika Brar as its Oliver “Student of the Month” for November.
As a member of the Oliver Ambassador Program, Deepika is busy with volunteering in the community. She was recently crowned as one of the Oliver Ambassadors to represent the Town of Oliver in events across the province and will make Oliver proud, said the SOSS Student of the Month committee.
Deepika also shares her heritage with others as she and her cousin teach Bhangra classes. She is working with the smaller children to teach dance and with older girls to choreograph dances presented at an Indian Festival in Oliver. Sharing her passion for this traditional dance with others is certainly a gift.
In addition to all the volunteer time that Deepika spends making Oliver a better place, she is also very busy in the schools. Several times a week Deepika helps the Senpaq’cin students complete activities provided by their teachers.
Most recently she started a Math 10 study club to support students who need extra help; this has been a great opportunity to make math more approachable and enjoyable for those who are struggling.
Deepika is an impressive member of our community, and she always has a smile on her face while she’s helping others.
