In one and a half hours a Grade 4 student in Oliver brought a little comfort to the homeless.
For Rayne Hall from Senpaq’cin School, all it took was some compassion and a “spare change” jar.
After learning about empathy in her class she decided to create a kindness mission with help from her mom and grandmother. It wasn’t long before the jar was filled with $200.
“I started this fundraiser because in class we were learning about caring and about taking action. I found this idea called spare change jar in a book and so I decided I wanted to do it,” said Rayne.
Instead of the homeless asking for spare change, she did it for them.
The money is going directly to the homeless shelter in Penticton.
“I think it is kind of a problem in Oliver but more in Penticton. I’d like to see more money out there for the homeless people.”
Rayne’s teacher, Susie Schlackl, said the class is learning how to show empathy and compassion towards others.
“The social emotional learning is so important to developing well rounded little humans,” she noted.
Rayne said she just knows that it’s good to help people.
