The Oliver Curling Club (OCC) has honoured as the 21st member to be presented with an Honorary Life Membership at its windup banquet and awards night on March 23.
This award recognizes many years of consistent effort and activity in the Oliver Curling Club where Surovy has been an active and involved member of the club for 50 years.
At different times he has served on the Board of Directors, organized the mixed league and men’s league, and in 2018 he organized a new stick league bringing in many new curlers which continues to grow under his leadership. He also organized the club’s first stick bonspiel this past season.
Surovy also volunteers time at the Learn-to-Curl sessions to instruct on the use of a stick, a device that has kept the membership numbers up because it enables people to curl longer, some into their 90’s, the club says.
When not on the rink he is also the OCC web master devoting many hours to keep the membership and community informed.
“Congratulations John and thank you for your dedication to the sport of curling in our community,” said the OCC.
The Oliver Curling Club was established in 1969 and at that time the Honorary Life Membership Award was established to recognize outstanding members. Over the past 55 years only 20 members have received this award.
