Canada Post and the Oliver RCMP are investigating an incidence of vandalism at the Crown corporation’s service office on Fairview Road.
Media relations Phil Rogers told the Times Chronicle that some vandalism occurred at the post office sometime after it closed on January 5. It was reported by one resident that nearly 50 boxes were broken into/tampered with but there was no official report of anything stolen.
Rogers said it would be inappropriate to comment further. When asked if Canada Post has surveillance video in its Oliver office, he said they don’t divulge specific security measures for fear of hampering their effectiveness.
Oliver RCMP commander Sgt. Don Wrigglesworth said they have offered Canada Post some security suggestions.
Rogers said the Oliver office was open on Friday and resumed normal operating hours.
“While repairs are being made to the postal boxes, we ask affected customers to temporarily collect their mail during regular retail counter hours,” he said. Customers must provide valid government-issued photo identification to pick up their mail.
Rogers said customers who believe they have not received a piece of letter mail should contact the sender. If they believe a parcel delivery is missing they should contact Canada Post’s customer service so that they can look into it and potentially work with the sender, who may initiate a claim with Canada Post. Customers should contact the sender to begin their claim for a refund or have the parcel sent to them again.
Customers concerned about identity fraud should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
If customers have questions regarding their postal services, they can contact Canada Post’s Customer Service team online at canadapost.ca/support or by telephone at 1-866-607-6301 (TTY: 1-800-267-2797).
