The Nk’Mip Creek wildfire has now surpassed 20,000 hectares.

Despite the 2,000-hectare jump, there was “benign” fire behaviour on Monday due to cooler temperatures and lower winds. Crews used this window to build new containment lines.

The fire to the east is still approximately 2.5 kilometres west Mt. Baldy village and two kilometres south of Mt. Baldy peak.

With cooler temperatures in coming days, crews will continue building guards on the north and northeast flanks. Planned ignitions may occur to burn existing fuel between the fire and the guards.

On August 13, staff from the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre in Osoyoos attended an evening operations meeting at a camp in Oliver, where they provided a brief presentation on rattlesnake awareness and safety. This presentation helped crews understand how to safely work in areas of the Okanagan Desert that are inhabited by the Western Rattlesnake and other snake species. It was noted how important the snakes are to the local ecology and culture.
