Junior Fire Chief Dhaliwal took charge of the Osoyoos Fire Rescue (OFR) on Friday, Nov. 8, with a busy day of supervising firefighters on important tasks like how to properly handle fire hoses, and keeping the engines clean as well as taking care of some paperwork.

Six year old Sargun (Sara) Dhaliwal from Osoyoos Elementary was the lucky student to be drawn for the honour of being Junior Fire Chief for the day.

Picking Sara up from her home in the morning with full lights and sirens the OFR brought her to school in style. “We left her at school for the morning because she wanted to learn more math,” chuckled Rob Huttema, Deputy Fire Chief of Fire Prevention.

With math finished the OFD firefighters returned to pick up the hungry chief for a special lunch at McDonalds with Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKortoff and the chief’s parents. After lunch Chief Dhaliwal was taken to the firehall for a tour where she gave some direction to the firefighters on hose handling procedures and fire engine cleaning.

The chief finished up some paperwork in her office before going for a drive and returning to school.

“From your entire team at Osoyoos Fire, thanks for a great day chief! We’d like to thank the staff at McDonalds-Osoyoos, Mayor Mckortoff and the Dhaliwal family for a fun day!”
