The end of summer represents a major transition for most, and the same is true at the Oliver Community Centre.

This year, however, the change of the season brings some very exciting new recreation opportunities.

The Fall/Winter Recreation Guide is packed full of fun and educational programs and classes for all ages. Pick up your very own copy at the following locations: Oliver Community Centre, Oliver Visitor’s Centre, Post Office, SuperValu, Buy-Low and Medici’s or visit www.oliverrecreation.ca to view online.

Some of the new programs being offered include Hot Yoga, “Shape and Shed” and a new all sport league; “Paper, Scissors and Paint” and “Kick and Run Soccer” for tykes plus new arts programs and after school activity options for children.

In the event of a delay for students returning to school, the Oliver Community Centre will be offering day camp programs 8 am-5 pm Tuesday-Thursday for children aged 5-11 years.  Activities will include indoor and outdoor fun such as games, swimming, craft projects and park time.  We must have a minimum of 6 children registered to operate (max of 20) so please register early to avoid disappointment.

The Oliver Pool has traditionally opened on the Victoria Day weekend and closed on Labour Day weekend.

The biggest reason behind this normal end-of-August closure of the pool is the lack of qualified lifeguards available to continue the operation, with the large majority of our seasonal pool staff returning to post-secondary education the first week of September.  This year with the very real possibility of the teachers strike continuing into September and the availability of five employees to continue working, the Oliver Parks and Recreation Society supported staff’s proposal to extend the operation of the pool on a reduced schedule until September 13. This will allow us to provide programs and public swimming to keep keeps kids busy and continue regular scheduled swims and fitness options for adults and seniors.  Due to the change in pool schedule the Annual Doggy Swim has been postponed until Saturday, Sept. 13 from 4-5 pm. Please visit our website www.oliverrecreation.ca for the lesson schedule and full pool schedule September 1-13.

The Oliver evening market continues in Community Park for two more weeks so if you have not made it down to check it out yet, now is your chance. This Thursday, August 28 will feature local musicians Brian Highley, Jeremy Cook, Graeme Baerg and Chad Teigen on stage, delicious noodles and Thai tacos being served up from the “Thai on the Fly” food truck and fun stuff for the kids!  The market has a great variety of locally made products so come on down.
