Unfortunately, this August long weekend turned into a deadly one after a 56-year-old man from Vancouver was found dead on Peanut Pond Monday morning.
Police said that on Sunday, Aug. 5 at about 1:30 p.m., a man from Vancouver was reported missing by his three friends.
Police said the four had been fishing from the shore of Peanut Pond, located between 89 Street and Vedette Drive in Osoyoos, and were getting ready to pack up for the day when the Vancouver man said he was going to go for a swim while the others gathered their belongings.
After a short time the three friends went back to the pond to get their friend, but he could not be found, said police.
The friends used a paddle boat to navigate the pond, but could not find the man. Police said at the time friends were unsure of whether or not the man might have left the area on foot.
Police conducted foot patrols near  the pond as well as other parts of Osoyoos in general that night, looking for the man, but to no avail.
The RCMP dive team was arranged to attend the following morning; however, on Monday, Aug. 6 at about 7 a.m., a local resident called police and told them there was a body floating in the pond.
Osoyoos RCMP assisted the B.C. coroner with removing the body, who was later identified as the missing man from the previous day.
Police said no foul play is suspected in the death, but alcohol may be a contributing factor.
