The regional district is urging people not to flush antiseptic wipes or similar products down the toilet because that causes gross “fatburgs.”
Don’t ask, but we’ll tell you anyway.
Recently, consumers have opted to purchase flushable antiseptic wipes due to limited supplies of toilet paper and other products.
While toilet paper is designed to disintegrate into pulp and move easily through the sewage process, antiseptic wipes do not.
“Do not flush these items down the toilet,” said board chair Karla Kozakevich, adding that flushable wipes should be disposed of in regular curbside garbage.
She said residents should always avoid flushing these products (including paper towels) down the toilet because these can seriously affect the operations of sewer infrastructure by clogging pipes and treatment plant equipment.
Wastewater operators have to engage in the very unpleasant task of finding and extracting these blockages, given the nickname of “fatburgs.”
Rina Seppen, wastewater utilities foreman, asks residents to be mindful.
“The last thing we need is to have the sewer lines clog and essential services stretched as we work to serve the public needs.”
