Former MP Alex Atamanenko will be honoured and recognized Saturday for his work over three terms as the Member of Parliament for B.C. Southern Interior.
The recognition takes place at the South Okanagan-West Kootenay (SOWK) NDP annual general meeting in Grand Forks.
Atamanenko was first elected in January 2006 and served as MP continuously until the October 2015 federal election, in which he chose not to run.
“I continually meet people who remark on Alex’s hard work, integrity and sincerity,” said Richard Cannings, MP for SOWK and Atamanenko’s successor. “He was a great representative for this area and has been a real mentor for me as a new MP.”
Atamanenko served throughout his entire period as MP on the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Foods.
He gained a reputation for speaking out on agricultural issues issues and food production, defending local food producers and wholesome and humane food production.
The meeting will be held at Grand Forks Seniors Centre. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m., but those wishing to greet Atamanenko should be there at 1:30 p.m. sharp so they don’t need to stay for the rest of the meeting.
