The Town of Oliver hopes that establishing WiFi access in Lion’s Park will alleviate the congestion of migrant farm workers at the library.

Council recently approved a motion that the Town allocate grant-in-aid funds (up to $300 to Oliver Parks and Recreation) to equip the park with WiFi service.

Corporate Officer Diane Vaykovich said the community receives an influx of migrant farm workers every summer.

She stated if these workers do not have accommodation, they seek out WiFi service in the community. Many of them gather and loiter at the Oliver library to use the WiFi service there.

Implementing WiFi in the park was one of many solutions identified by the Lion’s Park Action Committee to reduce pressure on the library.

Vaykovich said it is hoped that the WiFi idea will also minimize bylaw enforcement issues in the park.

She noted that the regional district has been provided with information from TELUS about potentially establishing WiFi service for migrant workers at Loose Bay campground.
