The B.C. Liberal Party is reviewing the candidacy of Oliver resident Joe Cardoso, who won the party's nomination in November to run in the new Boundary-Similkameen electoral district in the upcoming provincial election.
Party spokesman Chad Pederson told the Osoyoos Times on Feb. 3 that an appeals process has been launched concerning Cardoso's nomination.
Although there are a number of rumours circulating throughout the community as to why the appeal was called, Pederson said he could not comment on the situation while the appeal is before a party committee.
Cardoso, a former Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen rural Area C director and current communications manager for the Regal Ridge development on Anarchist Mountain, beat out former Osoyoos mayor John Slater and former Oliver mayor Ron Hovanes at a nomination meeting held in Osoyoos on Nov. 8.
Slater said he has no idea who is appealing the nomination or why Cardoso's candidacy may be in question.
He added that he feels the party needs to deal with this as soon as they can as British Columbians head to the polls on May 12.
Something has to happen soon, Slater said. We're running out of time.
How do you fundraise as a constituency?rnSlater also said that if the party has to nominate another candidate in this riding, he would run again.
My mind hasn't changed.rnHovanes said he hasn't heard anything from the party regarding a timeline for when the appeal process could finish.
The nomination process is an internal party process, he said, adding that he had heard nothing official about why the appeal was underway.
The rumours you've been hearing out on the street are the same ones I've been hearing.rnCardoso could not be reached for comment.
