The only losers are the citizens

Editor:rnI am sure that there isn't a day that goes by that you don't hear about the Gomery Inquiry on the news. Something that should be kept in mind is that while Judge Gomery is a Quebec Superior Judge, in his role as the head of the Inquiry he is a Commissioner, not a judge. Commissioner Gomery's mandate is to find the facts, he can not assign blame to any person, department, or party when he gives his final report.
At the end of the day Commissioner Gomery can tell us, as reported in the Auditor General's report, and has been shown in the testimony at the inquiry, that there were millions of dollars (potentially hundreds of millions of dollars) improperly spent, but he can not lay blame. Commissioner Gomery can only make recommendations to prevent another sponsorship scandal and characterize the one that he is dealing with.
And let's not add insult to injury. If Commissioner Gomery is ready to present the results of his inquiry in December, but the trials of those individuals and firms facing criminal and civil charges (whose cases start in October) are still ongoing his report must be delayed so as not to jeopardize their ability to receive a fair trial.
It would appear that, as usual, the only losers in this process are the citizens of Canada.
