Seventy-one new taxes in only 12 years.

Editor:rnI read the comments made by E.R. Rod Kerr and I don't agree.
I am a veteran, served 1941-46. I would like to know if he ever put his life on the line for this country.
I guess Mr. Kerr thinks that stealing and fraud are okay, but that is not what us veterans put our lives on the line for.
To illustrate – the people of Canada should calculate their pay checks in 1992 and now and see how much less they are bringing home.
They have cut health care payments to the provinces by 36 per cent.
They make it almost impossible to qualify to get unemployment insurance.
They have applied different tax on us 71 times in 12 years.
I could balance the books too.

rnEditor:rnI attended the Public Hearing with regards to the Gateway Marina. I wonder if Mr. Mortimer and I were at the same meeting. I counted two letters for this development and one of them was Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer.
There were nine submissions against. A petition with 133 signatures was presented against your develop-ment. Public presen-tations against also outnumbered you. The fact is, public opinion did not support you. Another rumor?rnThese 10 units will offer luxury rental accommodations to a high-end client with a minimum stay of a week. Two parking stalls each: one for their boat perhaps. These are self contained units. Are these patrons going to invest in our community? Another vacation rental unit that will not provide for sustained economy.
Mr. Mortimer, your lawyer likes metaphors. The land in question may be like a 'footprint; however, we know that another footprint usually follows. He referred to it as a postage stamp; well, postage always rises. He made reference to the new OCP and what it contains and how this development meets those needs. Yet another rumor; as the new OCP has not been completed.
Mr. Mayor, when asked about subsequent readings you responded this council will not be making any decisions with regards to this.
You and the departing council have gone ahead with the readings.
It was also mentioned that the petition that was presented had no precedence because the individuals did not reside in that area. You are wrong Mr. Mayor; we are all concerned citizens and even though we don't reside in the area, the lake belongs to the community.
We do not want another condo row. We need to set a precedence.

Editor:rnAs I was reading the Inside by Chuck Bennett about his first dog Duffy and Bogart, his best friend, tears started rolling down my cheeks.
In November 2001 I went through the same emotions he did when he was 19, blaming myself not to be with my 21-year-old cat Teny who I had since she was six weeks old.
Reading the article reminded me that sooner or later Fritz and I have to go through the same sorrow again, because our cat Flecklie, is now, too, 20 years, 7 months old. Although he is in excellent health, considering his age, we know that this could change any day. Losing a pet is as bad as losing a child.
Our only wish is that we do not have to play God again and make a decision to put him to sleep.
With this letter we just wanted to send our sincere sympathy to the Bennett family.

Editor:rnIs killing the answer?!rnThere are many concerns about the water quality and the pollution of Osoyoos lake.
One of the major concerns seems to be faeces of geese polluting our lake.
So last year it was decided that a number of geese were killed so they could no longer pollute our water.
How far have we gone in interfering with nature, that we put ourselves in the position of the higher power that decides whether animals should live or should die, because they pollute our water.
Isn't it the truth that if there was no human living around this lake and on this earth, nature would be perfectly intact and animals could live in peace with each other.
It brings tears to my eyes when I look out my window and what I see is ducks and geese and other birds and water animals living peacefully in nature not hurting anyone or each other except for food.
I find it absolutely disgusting and sad to think that maybe if we killed the geese that the ducks could be next, maybe there will be too many seagulls as well. How about the fish? How far are we going to go with this??rnWhat needs to be done is eliminating human pollution.
Building a sewer line around the lake without playing political games.
Educate farmers about the possibility of organic farming, eliminating run offs and pollution of ground water through pesticides and fertilizers.
Educating the public about polluting the lake with their garbage like cans, cigarette buts, etc. Millions of birds and fish die a very painful death every year with cigarette buts in their stomachs. Many animals have been found with plastic bags and metal pieces in their systems.
Maybe we should think each of us how we can participate and reduce, instead of killing geese.

Editor, Mayor and Council and the People of Osoyoos:rnRe: Fortis B.C.'s Nk'Mip Substation and Transmission Line Project Osoyoos of CPCN Application, BCUC Order G-114-05.
Osoyoos residents are you aware of the proposal by Fortis B.C. to run a high-voltage power transmission line through a residential neighbourhood?
This area is where we have parks, schools, community centre, a day care for children, families, young and elderly.
Do you know the consequences of what this will do to your health, the value of your property?rnI hope you will attend the meeting January 21, at 8:30 p.m. at the Osoyoos Senior Centre at 17 Park Place.
It is important that petitions be signed and we the taxpayers of Osoyoos write to Mr. Robert J. Pellatt, Commission Secretary, B.C. Utilities Commission, Sixth Floor, 900 Howe Street, Box 250, Vancouver, B.C. V6Z 2N3. Telling them we are not happy about and need more details before this work is done.
We all have to stand as a group to prevent this happening in our community.

rnEditor:rnGAWD!! Enough with the bleedin' condos!!
PLEASE stop all plans for more condo developments in Osoyoos as they really are defacing our once beautiful town.
In my opinion they do NOT benefit the local contractors. I think the only locals who get any business from these projects are the concrete providers who cut each other's throats to get the jobs anyhow.
Let's see some nearby orchards come out of the ALR and be developed into subdivisions for single family homes. This type of development would actually benefit our local community and contractors.
Say NO to such gross developments as the one proposed for the Gateway Marina property. Cudos to the tasteful Sonora Gardens development. Lastly, I hope that the Town of Osoyoos uses some of its new income to put sidewalks throughout town.. which could redeem some lost beauty!rnBrent Ogilvyrna resident of
