Sage should get licence

Editor:rnWe were told a long time ago that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
At the Town of Osoyoos Council meeting on Monday, May 2, we found out this was not always the case.
The Sage and Sand Neighbourhood Pub put in an application for a license to stay open till 2 a.m.
At the present time they are open till 1 a.m.
One other establishment doing the same kind of business in town is open till 2 a.m. Why doesn't the Sage get the same kind of closing time as the other establishment?
According to Councillor Davreux they can't allow that kind of noise in a residential area, after all they had four people against the application.
It was these people's choice to move into this area, knowing that the Sage Pub was there (the pub has been there for many years).
May we remind Councillor Davreux and the rest of the Council that we had a petition with 78 people against the go-cart track development at Rattlesnake Canyon.
There were 10 people for the development, of those 10 people, three were on our petition as well. Town council still passed the rezoning. The town council rezoned the residential area into highway commercial.
Dumping a noisy and smelly commercial operation into a residential area is a different scenario than the one at the Sage Pub.
We get the noise and smell of gas fumes for 12+ hours a day, 7 days of the week.
Finally the application was tabled for more information.
We live in a Democracy, the Sage should get the licence immediately, not have to wait for the next Council meeting.

Editor:rnI am not a member of any political party.
I am disgusted with the current political free for all that is currently happening. If ever there was an indication that the single transferable vote could work in Canadian politics, this is an example of why it would not. It is doomed because Canadian politicians cannot compromise. I appreciate that the referendum on this issue is B.C. only, but the pattern is the same federally, they cannot agree.
Stephen Harper is doing the Gandy-Dance, he won't say if he will defeat the Liberals, nor will he say that he won't. He is playing politics which must be obvious to Canadians.
Paul Martin is dead right in his appeal to the electorate that we wait for Gomery report, which he initiated. He also states that he will call an election 30 days after the report is concluded. I personally think that Paul Martin has done the best he can with what he inherited from the previous corruptness of the 'See No Evil, Hear No Evil' regime of Jean Chretien.
In my opinion, we don't need another election which will result in another minority government.

Editor:rnThe purpose of this letter is to revoke the signatures of Don & Judy Koropatnicki in support of the 2% tax to be collected by the lodging sector of Osoyoos.
After further review we feel it is not right for the lodging sector to have to collect a 2% tax on our customers.
We did follow-ups on the lodging sector in other parts of Canada and the world, we were not impressed with the results.
It was not the lodging sector who approached us about the 2% tax for marketing but Destination Osoyoos. We would like to rescind our support as we felt duress to sign the paper.

Editor:rnWhat are these million $ babies (players) from the 5 & 10 cent store doing to our (Canada's) game? Unionize the players? The only reason must be for job security. Don't players get rewarded for productivity? Goals, Assists, Plus or Minus Ratings? These provide job security. In the union world job security doesn't come by way of productivity.
The player who does badly will have no fear for he will be protected. The fans and owners will have fear as they will either have to put up with watching under-achievers play badly with no consequence, or simply give up on the teams and don't watch the games.
Here's a scary scenario: can you just imagine contracts where the forwards will wear green helmets and will not be allowed to back check more than 10 feet into their own end. This is for the yellow helmeted defencemen to do…its their job to defend.
Conversely, the yellow helmeted defencemen must not go more than 10 feet past the opposing blue line. This is for the green helmets as scoring goals is their job. Try telling Ed Jovanosky he will have to live without rushes up the ice.
If a yellow helmet is in a green zone an alarm sounds and the game comes to a halt, mediation takes place (the fans go for a cold one) and when the internal squabble has been settled, then the game can continue.
That is until Martin Brodeur the goaltender (red helmet) stick handles with the puck, or passes to a player more than 10 feet from his crease.
Can you imagine what happens to a goalie if he gets an assist on a play?rnThis sounds and probably is far fetched, but it did happen at the Burns Foods Plant in Edmonton. A sausage worker (colored hard hat) went into a pork processing area (different colored hard hat) to pick up a case of pre-packaged pork loin chops to fill an order and ship it to the customer. The pork workers were on a break, but a pork union rep saw the wrong colored hat in his area and a bell sounded.
Someone was taking work away from the pork workers. Work halted and a lengthy discussion ensued. This resulted in the order being shipped out 48 hours later than it should.
I know as I was there in the sales department at the time. The plant no longer exists. For heavens sake, let common sense reign . . . it's only a game but it's our game.

Editor:rnI just hope folks won't be so naive as to believe all the wonderful things the Liberals have done. If you think all the jobs that have been created, at the most $10 an hour, how are you going to pay high rents, expensive groceries, gas, etc., etc.
What do you think will happen when folks have to hold down two or three jobs in order to pay their mortgage, drive back and forth to work at the price of gas? For married couples with a family to look after, mother will also have to hold down two jobs. How much time will they have for their children?rnAll the money he is passing around, like there is no limit to how good they are. That money they got from all the cutbacks, and coming out of the wages of the hospital workers wages, like $3.00 an hour off their pay checks and retroactive at that.
All the hospital beds closed, reducing some of the hospitals to close down completely. Beautiful schools closed right down. I wonder how many folks think about that?rnAlso why do we have so many street people? What will happen to them if they take jobs at low low wages. How can they pay rent? The landlords are not lowering their rents and then the matter of eating and clothing.
To my way of thinking, one of the reasons our big cities and small cities in the Okanagan have so many street people. Many of us older folks have children who have very insecure jobs and don't think the Conservatives will be any different when it comes to privatization. Also what do you think of our ferries being built in Germany? The Germans in Europe don't pay taxes in B.C. My late husband was a shipwright and helped build ships for the navy for World War II. If they were good enough to do that why couldn't they do it now for our province?rnSo folks think about putting your X for Carole James, a very intelligent capable lady. Not a bad idea, a lady Premier.
