Border line-ups out of line

Jim Gouk:rnI am writing this letter regarding our multi million-dollar custom and immigration building. I have lived in Osoyoos for 68 years, and remember as a child going to Oroville. At that time there was one lane of traffic for all vehicles including trucks.
Now 60 years later and a multi million-dollar expenditure we still have 1 lane open, and most of the time it includes trucks and buses.
I have no idea how many staff are on-duty at any given time, but it seems to me there would be more than one young girl on duty on a busy Friday afternoon in July. Where are the others? With a five-lane capacity why do we only have 1 lane open?rnI am not suggesting all five lanes be open at all times. I am however suggesting that a half hour wait is unacceptable and that there must be a procedure in place whereby staff are required to open additional lanes when they see that traffic is backed up past a reasonable time.
And while I'm on the subject, how much did we pay for the design of the five-lane custom clearance that immediately narrows to a single lane.
A response would be appreciated.

Editor:rnMichael Marzolini, chair of Pollara polling, blames Stephen Harper for the Conservative's low polling numbers (Harper a 'hamstring, July 19).
He fails to take into account that the Conservatives are just as unpalatable to Canadians as their leader. A recent Ipsos Reid poll stated that if Bernard Lord or Peter Mackay was leader of the Conservatives, Tory support would be even lower than under Harper! On the same page as Harper is a hamstring was an article on the Conservatives calling fines on large polluters a carbon tax. Canadians want an alternative to the Liberals that will protect our environment for future generations.
On this issue and many others, with or without Harper, the Conservatives are clearly not a desirable option. We need to be building a political alternative that Canadians want. That is why we are building the only alternative that can defeat the Liberals ” the Progressive alternative, at http://www.progressivecanadian.org .
