With David Eby becoming premier designate, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on his government to cut taxes to save British Columbians money.
British Columbians have seen record prices for gas and groceries and they can’t afford tax hikes. Eby ran for the leadership of his party on a platform of tax hikes, but raising taxes right now is irresponsible and reckless.
Eby has committed to introducing a sales tax on real estate sold within two years of purchase.
He has not released estimates of how much this tax hike will cost taxpayers in BC.
This tax grab will make homes less affordable across BC, it will prevent people from fixing up homes and make buying and selling homes more expensive.
Eby’s government could eliminate the second carbon tax and suspend the provincial excise tax on gasoline and diesel to save drivers 25 cents tax per litre. That move would save an average of around $20 per minivan fill-up.
British Columbians currently pay the highest gasoline taxes in North America, at about 75 cents per litre in the Lower Mainland.
Fuel taxes contributed to the record-breaking high fuel prices across the province at the start of October.
