Town council plans to shed a little more light on Spartan Street after hours.
On Monday, staff recommended that council spend $10,000 for five additional lamp standards to complement the newly constructed sidewalk.
In his report, Director of Operations Shawn Goodsell indicated that residents in the area spoke to staff about additional lighting due to concerns regarding crime and personal safety.
“Having the extra lighting along this street would make some of the residents in the neighbourhood feel more safe.”
Councillor Maureen Doerr said considering what goes on in this neighbourhood, lighting is definitely needed.
Goodsell said the total cost of the Spartan Street upgrade project, adding the $10,000, is approximately $250,000.
Chief Financial Officer Devon Wannop said this extra cost could be covered by reserves.
Councillor Dave Mattes suggested looking into cheaper lighting options, such as utilizing lights that were previously removed from Main Street. But Goodsell said these lights are not in the best of shape. He also mentioned they are utilizing LED lighting in all Town infrastructure as a cost-saving measure.
Mayor Ron Hovanes said they should try to erect these lights on Spartan in the next month or two. Goodsell said the lights should be up and operational within six weeks.
Mattes encouraged council to do more research.
“If we can accomplish it for half the money, we should look into it.”
Council approved a motion to send the issue back for further study.
