The Oliver Legion invites everyone to cheer on Kate MacEachern on Wednesday, July 8 as she walks across Canada to raise awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
MacEachern will arrive at the welcome sign south of town at approximately 12:30 p.m. From there she will walk to the legion where a fundraising barbecue will be organized in her honour (until 3 p.m.). The public is invited to attend.
Legion member and war veteran Jim Stewart encourages people to cheer her on and support her “amazing cause” as she gets close to completing her walk.
MacEachern is trying to raise money for veterans and first responders who suffer from PTSD.
Her walk, called The Long Way Home, takes her from Nova Scotia to the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
The single mother served eight years in the Canadian military as a tank driver.
In 2007 she suffered workplace injuries including a broken neck, spinal cord damage and a fractured skull. Her family was told she would remain in a vegetative state indefinitely, but she walked out of the hospital nine days later.
MacEachern recovered to return to work and walk 574 km, raising $20,000 for disabled soldiers over 19 days in 2012.
Now she is walking more than 1,800 km.
“Let’s give her a huge Oliver welcome,” said Stewart, who also suffers from PTSD.
