The Osoyoos Coyotes and the Kamloops Storm were neck in neck for most of their game at Sun Bowl Arena on Saturday evening, and just when it looked like the match would be going into overtime, a last-minute goal brought the Coyotes their 14th win of the season.
The game started off slow with a scoreless first period. A powerplay goal by Peter Michailides with 8:17 left in the second frame was followed by one from Kamloops not even a minute later.
Brax Klassen’s goal with less than a minute left on the clock in the third period – his first goal of the season – brought the Coyotes ahead.
Despite finishing the game with an empty net and extra man on the ice, the Storm were not able to pull ahead before the game ended.
Coyotes goalie Daniel Paul stopped all but one of the 32 shots against him – the same amount of shots on goal Osoyoos made throughout the night.
The game was interim head coach and general manager Dean Maynard’s first leading the team. The former assistant coach filled the position earlier this week after former head coach and GM Mark Chase was relieved of his duties on Monday.
“The players responded well with all that went on this week,” Maynard said. “When I entered the dressing room, the players were focused; they were much more disciplined as a whole and supported each other on the bench.”
This weekend the Coyotes travel to take on the Summerland Steam on Friday, and host the Kelowna Chiefs at Sun Bowl Arena on Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
