When it comes to golf, focusing on the results as opposed to enjoying the challenge can work against you.

That’s what Fairview Mountain Golf Course professional Brian McDonald learned recently.

He was one of 90 professionals who competed in the PGA of BC Championship at Fairview on August 24-25.

McDonald said it was great to host the top golf professionals in the province and to know that your facility measures up to the best clubs in BC.

The director of golf said the tournament definitely gave Fairview Mountain and the region good exposure.

“It was a shame our skies were so smoky as a number of the guys have never been to the South Okanagan, so it would have been nice to showcase the world class wineries, beaches and outdoor activities. But the golf course is in great shape and players were very impressed.”

McDonald shot a 74, 72, which was a bit disappointing for him considering how he’s been playing lately. He came into the championship looking to fire a couple of rounds in the 60s.

“Golf is tough, and even when you are playing well it doesn’t guarantee you’re always going to score well. The constant challenge of the game is part of the beauty.”

McDonald said he hit the ball well, but found the greens to be a challenge when they are normally his strength.

“I had trouble getting my speed which I thought would have been one of my advantages over some of the top professionals from the city.”

His best hole was on day 2; he made an eagle 3 on the #5, which was fun.

When asked what he learned from the tournament, McDonald said, “You can’t get too excited to do well and/or want something too much as it can work against you.”

McDonald stated he really wanted to play well and try to win for the membership because they have always been so supportive.

“I probably put a little too much pressure on getting results versus just going out and enjoying the challenge.”
