A young moose was reunited with its family, thanks to RCMP in Keremeos.

RCMP received a call that a young moose caught its leg in a barbed wire fence on Highway 3A north of Ollala on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., Const. James Grandy said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Keremeos officer Matthew Groen arrived and bystanders told him they believed the moose’s mother was nearby and reluctant to move along without the calf.

“He returned to the detachment to find bolt cutters to cut the wire,” Grandy said.

Const. Groen returned to the scene and was successful in freeing the moose from the fence, and the moose was seen running back into the brush Grandy said.

“These are the kinds of good news stories the public rarely hears about. Officers working in remote detachments often have to use their ingenuity to problem solve unique situations on their own,” Const. Grandy said.
