He was a longtime member who dedicated a great deal of his time and efforts to the golf course.
And this past Saturday, he was remembered by 60 of his closer friends, and golfing buddies.
The Second Annual Barry Johnson Classic Golf Tournament took place Saturday, with lots of wind and sunshine, and even a few birdies, highlighting the day’s event.
It was the first golf tournament of the season at Fairview Mountain Golf Course.
“He was instrumental in running all men’s tournaments and scrambles over the last 25 or 30 years,” offered Fairview member John Chapman. “He, very quietly behind the scenes, organized things. He was on the tournament committee for 25 years.”
Chapman’s five-some was one of a dozen groups which took to the course Saturday morning in a best ball scramble.
“Barry was kind of an institution here. He volunteered for everything, committed his time to the club and was a dedicated member. Everybody who knew Barry had a very strong opinion about him. It was always positive. He had the wryest sense of humour and he was just one of those people you were delighted to be around,” said Roger Hall. “It was a huge loss to the club and a wonderful tribute the club has made to him with this being an annual event. Very few people who are members here for any length of time don’t know Barry Johnson – and know him well. He made his mark here.”
And the winners were: First with a score of 59 were captain Fred Rempel and the team of Paul Kesselring, Gary Shannon, Kirk Harkness and Doug Bennest.
Second place with 61 went to the group fo captain Guy Dow and Mike Daley, Ken Hautamaki, Mike Mann and Kevin Dolighan.
Taking third place with a 62 were captain Barrie McConachie and the team of Rob Zandee, Rich Fournier, Doug Brandt, and Bruce Porteous.
“This event is one of our favourite events of the year, a great way to kick off 2015,” said Danny Long, head golf professional at Fairview Mountain. “It really gives the competitors and staff a chance to celebrate Barry as well, a member who meant so much to our facility.”
