The Town of Oliver will be penning a letter supporting the Oliver and District Heritage Society’s (ODHS) nomination for an award for their new “Ditch” video.
“Oliver’s Irrigation Ditch: Lifeline of a Community” is a video project that showcases the history and cultural significance of the irrigation canal from its inception in the 1920s up till today.
Councillor Terry Schafer brought to council a notice of motion with a letter supporting the nomination of ODHS and their recently completed video for a Heritage BC award under the “education, communications and awareness” category.
The Heritage BC website explains this award category recognizes “excellence in programming that advances the appreciation, understanding, and practice of tangible and intangible cultural heritage as it relates to places in BC.”
Schafer originally brought the motion to council in December 2024, as he noted “there was some urgency” to get the nomination in on time.
The nomination period was now determined to open in June 2025 and goes through July 2025. In August the Heritage BC Awards Jury will meet and evaluate the nominations and award recipients will be notified privately.
In September the award recipients will be announced and celebrated at the Heritage BC Awards Ceremony.
All councillors unanimously supported the recommendation.
The Heritage BC awards celebrate outstanding achievements and best practices which strengthen all forms of heritage as a valued cultural resource.
“Oliver’s Irrigation Ditch: Lifeline of a Community” can be viewed on the Oliver & District Heritage Society website or on YouTube.
