Incumbents returned as McKortoff now the only woman on council

Osoyoos Town Council will see two new members, Brian Harvey and Myers Bennett, while the other three are returning incumbents.

Mayor Sue McKortoff easily defeated Doug “Stone Dan” Pederson with 1,379 to 162. Pederson ran on the single issue of promoting cannabis.

On school board, incumbent Casey Brouwer returns, and is joined by education activist Brenda Dorosz, who with 1,274 votes was well ahead of the other two candidates. Brouwer got 1,015 votes and Penny Duperron, who was defeated, got 730.

Among the two newcomers, Harvey picked up the most votes of any of the councillor candidates with 1,004, which put him four votes ahead of second-place finisher and incumbent C.J. Rhodes, who had 1,000.

Incumbent Jim King placed third with 963 and Bennett got 686.

McKortoff now finds herself the only woman on council.

Among the female councillor candidates, Jane Long did the best with 523 votes, followed by Shelley McIntyre with 457 and Sherani Theophilus with 390.

Newcomer Kenny Music, who came to Osoyoos this summer, got 349 votes, while perennial candidate Sy Murseli finished last with 329 votes.
