A reported “homeless camp”on the former Forbes’ property near Station Street and Co-op Avenue in Oliver has burned to the ground.
Firefighters and police were called to attend “black smoke” coming from the property before noon today. It was the same location where a couple of structures were destroyed by fire under suspicious circumstances several months ago.
Firefighters used water and foam to extinguish the fire that produced some heavy flames in what appeared to be a brush fire. Fire department spokesman Rob Graham confirmed it was a makeshift homeless camp in the trees.
He said nobody was around but they received confirmation from someone that the occupants were at the warming shelter in town.
Graham said they are unsure of fire’s cause but officials did find a few empty propane tanks in the camp. He noted that everything associated with the camp was destroyed. No injuries were reported.
Graham said this was the fourth time firefighters were called to the property during the past year.
