Sixteen teams from across BC were on the ice Friday night for the opening ceremonies of the 49th annual Atom Fiesta.

The event is held through this weekend primarily at Sun Bowl Arena in Osoyoos with some games also played at the Oliver Arena.

At stake is the Canusa Cup, sponsored by Canusa Transportation in Osoyoos, which was won last year by the home team South Okanagan Minor Hockey’s U11 development team – the first time in 27 years.

Mayor Sue McKortoff and Councillor Jim King welcomed the parents, coaches and players that travelled to Osoyoos for the tournament. She also noted that two teams – the South Okanagan team and Quesnel have played at every single Atom Fiesta. The event was not held during 2020/21 due to the pandemic.

Various organizers also thanked the large number of volunteers as well as sponsors who make the tournament possible each year.
