Grand Chief Stewart Phillip has been re-elected by acclamation to his ninth consecutive term as president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs.

The UBCIC says Phillip has committed to strengthening and protecting the interest, title and rights of Indigenous people provincially and beyond.

The union adds that Phillip has taken a lifelong role in working tirelessly to ensure that the actions of all levels of government are directed by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice.

“I am deeply grateful for the ongoing support and confidence of the UBCIC Chiefs Council,” stated Phillip. “There is more work to do than ever on the implementation of our inherent and constitutionally protected title and rights.”

The Grand Chief said they continue to advocate for equity, address the climate emergency, and identify legislative priorities for alignment with the UN Declaration. He added they continue to “struggle to emerge from the pervasive colonial hangover that permeates so many aspects of our lives, including recovering from the genocidal so-called Indian Residential School system.”
