A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help the Hilario family after Joe Hilario died after being struck by a vehicle in Spokane, Washington which has left his wife Vera in critical condition.

On July 11 the couple were enjoying a morning walk in Spokane when both were struck by a vehicle at a pedestrian crosswalk.

“Joe, a beloved husband, father, and friend to many, tragically lost his life that day. Vera remains in the intensive care unit, fighting for her own life with courage and strength that inspires us all,” family and friends said on the GoFundMe page.

“The Hilario family has always been an integral part of our community, known for their kindness, generosity, and unwavering support for others. In this dark hour, as they navigate this unimaginable loss and uncertainty, it is our time to rally around them with love, care, and unwavering support.”

The financial burden of such a tragedy is significant and the fact it occurred in the US, means added layers of complexity and unforeseen expenses.

“If it is within your means, I urge you to consider contributing to support Vera’s ongoing critical care, arrangements for Joe’s funeral, and the needs of the family staying in Spokane during this trying time,” they urged.

The family has created a platform for updates on Vera’s condition where people can show solidarity and send messages of support:

For those who wish to share words of comfort or photos with Vera and her family, you can reach out via her Facebook profile managed by Thomas Hilario:

“Your donations, no matter the size, and your efforts to spread the word about this campaign will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the Hilario family during this period of grief and upheaval. Let us come together as a community, united by compassion and empathy, to embrace this family with unwavering support, strength, and heartfelt care during this unimaginable and deeply challenging time,” the page reads.

As of Tuesday (July 16) afternoon donations to the GoFundMe page had reached $40,000 exceeding the the $25,000 goal. The page, managed by Sara van der Hoeven, can be found here.
