Gino’s Coffee House is set to be the centre of attraction on Saturday in Osoyoos as the first-annual cancer treatment fundraiser is taking place.
Gino DeRos – the namesake of the cafe – died about a year ago after a battle with brain cancer that began with a tumor when he was only six years old and ultimately took his life 30 years later.
For his wife Arielle DeRos the event aims to turn the memories into action in supporting the Michael Cuccione Foundation, of which DeRos said her husband whole-heartedly supported.
“Gino wanted to start his own foundation, but we didn’t get there in time, and it was really close to his heart,” DeRos said. The Saturday, Sept. 21 event is aimed at raising funds through a 50-50 draw, and silent auction amongst others and the event will feature a car show (in the alley behind the cafe) and a lineup of live bands and singers.
With excitement bubbling in her voice DeRos expressed her appreciation for the support they have received. “This community has backed us so much. We appreciate them, they’ve donated a lot, including a sound bar some really amazing gifts cards and lots of bottles of wine. We might do a wine tower, too!” she laughs.
The cafe opens at 7 a.m. with all the silent auction items on display and then at noon all the festivities will start carrying on into the evening.
