Young budding artists in Osoyoos will be showing their work at the Osoyoos Art Gallery in an exhibition that opens on Saturday.

The show, Osoyoos Young Artists, runs from April 4 to 25 and features the work of children from local schools of all levels.

“It’s been kind of an annual event for the gallery,” said Dianne Hughes, acting director.

The event includes work of children from elementary school, high school, private schools, daycare and home schooling.

“It’s a time when we like to display it to the community,” said Hughes. “It’s a variety of talents right up from the young kids to the high school students that are doing excellent work.”

While last year’s exhibition was combined with a retrospective featuring some of the original artists of Artists on Main, this year’s show is dedicated entirely to youth.

Hughes guessed that work of more than 50 students would be shown.

Artwork for the show is contributed by the schools, which work with retired teacher Maureen Potter as a liaison, Hughes said. There is no formal selection process, but Potter contacts the art teachers.

The pieces will cover the gamut of artistic media.

“We get paintings, we get crafty kind of art that might be paper plates making faces,” said Hughes. “One year they did wonderful masks and the older children will do acrylic or oil paintings. Some do drawings.”

One year a student made a horse from popsicle sticks, Hughes said.

“They come up with some really great ideas,” she added.

The gallery is located at 8713 Main Street and is open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday.
