A water management and hydroelectric dam project on the Similkameen River will not be going forward, a company owned by Fortis Inc. announced last week.

Fortis Generation Similkameen LP said the decision was based on the most recent feasibility studies.

The 165-metre high concrete dam, measuring 500 metres across, was to have been located 15 kilometres southwest of Princeton and would have produced 45 to 65 megawatts of hydroelectric power. It would also have been used for water management.

“We believe that building a water storage hydroelectric facility on the Similkameen River would create many benefits for the area,” said project manager Joseph Suhhnandan in a news release. “However, based on the results of our latest engineering and economic studies, we determined the project is not financially viable at this time.”

Fortis Generation, which is indirectly, wholly owned by Fortis Inc., said it may re-evaluate the viability of the project in the future based on customer demand and market conditions.
