The Oliver Fire Department is urging people not to leave their burn piles unattended. They repeat: don’t start an open burn and walk away from it.
That was apparently the case on Thursday around 4:30 p.m. when a property owner left a burn unattended near the hike and bike path off Sawmill Road and Road 6.
Fire department spokesman Rob Graham said an afternoon wind picked up some embers from an earlier burn pile and ignited some dry grass nearby. The fire spread approximately two hectares.
The property owners were spoken to by fire officials, but no fine was issued.
“A reminder yet again to never leave your burn unattended and to always have tools and (water) resources available to handle any fire that may get away on you,” the fire department says.
